Background information

We tend to believe that visual design is a skill performed by gifted individuals and is beyond the reach and mastering of non-designers. As a visual designer and teacher, I challenge this belief and suggest a set of techniques and tools for implementing design rules in our deliverables -  wire frames, prototypes, specs and even spreadsheets. This practice has proven to increase appreciation and confidence in decision makers who need to accept and approve our deliverables.

Outline

The workshop will outline the core foundations of design; color, typography, layout and composition and provide practical tools for easily using these to make wireframes and prototypes more appealing to view but also clearer and better understood.

Participants will learn

  • The impact of better designed wireframes and prototypes on acceptance procedures.

  • Practical principles for implementing design rules in wireframes and prototypes.

  • Better understanding of the foundations of visual design skills.

The session proposes a simplified and general model for explaining the core factors affecting the experience users have when interacting with products.

Background information

UX is a relative young profession. In a way, it was practiced long before it had a name by engineers, designers and crafts men. In the past decade or more there have been many suggested forms of mapping or defining the factors accounting for how users experience an interaction with products some have inspired the entire profession. This session attempts to generalize these theories into a simplified formula or model.

Outline

The workshop will introduce a critical perspective on the UX profession. After presenting this perspective, participants will perform small interface suggestions or “puzzles” which respond to this perspective which will provide a practical anglr on UX in general.

Participants will learn

  • Participants may hopefully gain an intuitive model for better evaluating the impact of different factors affecting experiences they may be delivering in their work. The session attempts to increase sensitivity to friction in interfaces and to better sesnse the weight additional features may have on how user’s experience products and interfaces.
